CDR Roundup - In the absence of a strong economy and any hot new products, costume jewelry is holding its own. Category sales at chain drug stores rose 12% in 1990 to $200 million, according to industry estimates. And costume jewelry captured a 9.6% share of overall sundries sales.
"Jewelry isn't a real hot category right now, although it may be getting better," says Susan Lund, a buyer for Snyder Drug Stores, based in Minnetonka, Minn.
While hopeful, both distributors and buyers still don't foresee any return to their great sales success of the mid-1980s.
